Earlier this week, on Wednesday, Jan. 8, a student alleged that she was sexually abused by another student at the New Rochelle High School in the past, prompting a police investigation.
On Friday, Jan. 10, investigators announced that they had arrested a teenaged student in connection to the incident.
“As a result of the investigation into this incident by New Rochelle Police Department Detectives, a 14-year-old student was charged,” police said in a statement. “The case will be adjudicated in Youth Part of the County Court.”
No additional information is expected to be immediately released.
The district is conducting its own investigation, according to reports, and counselors and support professionals were to be made available to students through the rest of the week.
New Rochelle Schools Superintendent Laura Feijoo acknowledged in a letter to parents that a student “raised an extremely concerning allegation of sexual assault at the school.”
“Upon learning of the allegation, school staff followed all proper procedures, including immediately notifying law enforcement and me,” she continued. “While the district has already begun investigating the alleged incident, as well as its response to the allegation, this matter is now under active police investigation, with which the district is fully cooperating.”
